High Hopes : la tracklist officielle

Pour le choix de Londres j'ai une petite hypothèse: le son du concert n'est pas parasité par le public vu qu'il s'agit d'un concert qui n'est pas dans une enceinte mais sur un parking, de plus les anglais ne sont pas très bruyants.

J'y viens bien davantage pour voir se mélanger tout un tas de 'subjectivités' justement. Après, chacun est à même de faire le tri, d'y piocher ce qui l'intéresse, d'ignorer le reste, de voir comment il se positionne....

J'aime bien la nouvelle version de High Hopes et ce n'est pas parce que d'autres sur le forum ne partagent pas mon avis que cela va me chagriner ou qu'il me viendrait à l'idée de leur demander de quel droit ils peuvent affirmer que ce titre est balourd (encore moins de recevoir leur avis comme un affront personnel...)

Je suis curieux de connaitre les réactions de 'connaisseurs' mais aussi, plus largement, de ceux avec qui je partage une passion (ou au moins un intérêt). Parfois je me reconnais dans ce que je lis, parfois je suis étonné, surpris voire incrédule ... mais tout me semble bon à prendre, le mouvement d'humeur comme l'avis argumenté...  L'un n'étant pas fatalement supérieur à l'autre d'ailleurs.

Deux petites réflexions, si le contenu du bonus se confirme.
Bruce a donc choisi de mettre l'accent sur "BitUSA" en cette année anniversaire de sortie et, à priori, de sortie de coffret consacré à l'album.
Peut être que dans le coffret il y aura un DVD live de la tournée de l'époque, peut être un plus récent lors duquel il aura joué l'album, mais j'imagine que ce sera un autre show que celui proposé en bonus en janvier.

Entre l'album joué à plusieurs reprises sur des dates "capitales" de la tournée, ce bonus et le coffret annoncé en fin d'année, la thématique du moment, en filigrane du nouvel album, est aussi "BitUSA"

C'est off-topic mais du coup, si un coffret THE RIVER est zappé, et considéré comme inutlie puisque la plupart des inédits sont sur Tracks cd 2, l'absence de remasterisation de cet album va se faire sentir; la remasterisation de nos jours, consistant principalement à booster le volume, il faut déjà le monter de 4 sur le potard, quand on l'écoute dans la foulée de Darkness…

Puisque les outtakes/covers sur High Hopes couvrent la période de 1995 à aujourd'hui, c'est dommage que Waiting On The End Of the World n'y soit pas.

À mon avis il reste énormément d'outtakes pour l'album The River.

Ils ont enregistrés au moins 60 chansons. Il y en a 30-35 de sorties.

Ça nous prend effectivement un remaster pour The River. Je n'ai toujours pas de CD de cet album. J'attend un remaster depuis un bon 15 ans.

Pour que Ron Aniello y ajoute des sons d'explosions atomiques ou de vagues de tsunamis géants, non bah c'est bon, je préfère qu'elle reste à l'état d'outtake...

Je crois qu'il avait aussi enregistré une émission à Londres durant le Seeger Sessions Tour. Mais cette émission n'est pas sortie en DVD. Ça en ferait 5...

J'aimerais voir un DVD de Bruce enregistré en Suède.

Et très jolie tournée... ce concert dans l'église était enregistré la veille du concert de Bercy d'ailleurs.

High Hopes est dispo sur la FNAC, avec le DVD aussi (qui n'est donc pas une exclu amazon).

On y retrouve le E- Street Band mais aussi Tom Morello et de nombreux invités qui complètent la nouvelle signature musicale de l'album.
Ce 18ème album studio de Bruce Springsteen a été enregistré entre le New Jersey, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Australia et New York City.
Tom Merello se joindra au E-Street band lors de la tournée Australienne en mars 2014 (en remplacement de Steve Van Zandt)
et devient comme le dit Bruce « ma nouvelle muse qui élève notre projet musical à un autre niveau ».
Outre de jouer l'ensemble des guitares sur l'album, Tom chante en duo avec Bruce sur 'The Ghost of Tom Joad'.
Clarence Clemons disparu en 2011 et Danny Federici disparu en 2008, apparaissent aussi sur plusieurs chansons qui d'après l'avis de Bruce Springsteen sont parmi les meilleurs titres inédits écrits ces 10 dernières années !

Les suédois ont déjà pu écouter l'album (et pourquoi un tel favoritisme, hein, pourquoi?  )

Bon, en même temps, le leak est sans doute pour bientôt... so who cares?

Le journaliste de l'Afton Bladet est assez critique sur certains points mais j'ai vaguement envie de lui faire confiance parce que, comme lui, je trouve la version solo live de Dream Baby Dream parue en single infiniment supérieure à celle studio publiée récemment et qui figurera sur le nouvel 'album'

1. High Hopes
Springsteen released a version of the song , which was originally written by Tim Scott McConnell from Hava Linas, already in 1995. This remake has a larger and more folky sound.

2. Harry's Place
Heavy, bluesy rock with soul street where the vocals are sometimes pushed through a megaphone . Springsteen's new sidekick Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine presents itself.

3. American Skin (41 Shots)
Released on the live album " Live in New York City" in 2001. The remake begins as a ballad on " Tunnel of Love" and is steadily growing in size and volume. Great guitar solos and a saxophone.

4. Just Like Fire Would
Studio recording of live rarity . A cover of the lovable garage rock band The Saints from Australia. Warm rustic mix of ringing guitars, pianos, violins and soul choirs.

5. Down In The Hole
Fateful and sad song . It feels like the music is trying to catch the rhythm and sounds in a factory or mine . The song ranks somewhere between the albums " The ghost of Tom Joad " and "The Rising " .

6. Heaven's Wall
Similar meeting between protest songs and vocal urban rock on the album " Wrecking Ball " . And instead of saxophone : Tom Morello lets the guitar playing Jimi Hendrix.

7. Frankie Fell In Love
Will apparently be about Springsteen and Little Steven's early years in Asbury Park. One such story , however, deserves a more magical song .

8. This Is Your Sword
Psalm Similar and julklingande melody where Springsteen uses the correct worn metaphors sword and shield.

9. Hunter of Invisible Game
More American folk and grim nature of romance. Low, unimaginative and monotonous .

10. The Ghost of Tom Joad
The electrical and heavy and long version, which has been a crowd favorite for years has had a home on the disc. Here fight the guitars so much that you bruise your ears. The roar reminiscent of Neil Young's recording with Crazy Horse .

11. The Wall
Inspired by an old friend who went missing during the Vietnam War. Also a live rarity now caught up in the studio. The album's saddest moments. Springsteen sings with great tenderness and empathy. The trumpet towards the end are dazzling beautiful.

12. Dream Baby Dream
Prefer solo version of Suicide - cover song that Bruce did with pump organ in the mid -2000s

Intéressant. Pas mal d'info dans cet interview. Il ne parle pas ouvertement d'une tournée en 2014 mais c'est tout comme. Pas de BITUSA box set mais une rédition de The River.

Tom Morello was driving around Los Angeles in late 2012 when "High Hopes" – one of the most obscure songs in Bruce Springsteen’s vast catalog, originally released on a forgotten 1996 EP – came on E Street Radio, the SiriusXM channel devoted to Springsteen. "I was reminded what a jam it was," says the Rage Against the Machine guitarist, who was preparing to serve as a temporary replacement for Steve Van Zandt on the E Street Band’s 2013 tour of Australia. "In the middle of the night, I texted Bruce and said, 'What do you think about 'High Hopes' for the tour?’ He agreed we should put it in the set." Little did Morello realize that a new version of "High Hopes" would become the title track of Springsteen’s 18th studio album, due out January 14th.


High Hopes is a first for Springsteen: a studio album composed entirely of covers, outtakes and radically reimagined versions of fan-favorite songs from past albums and tours. High points include a cover of Seventies punk pioneers Suicide ("Dream Baby Dream"); songs originally wrote for 2002's The Rising ("Harry's Place," "Down in the Hole"); and searing new takes of concert staples "The Ghost of Tom Joad" and "American Skin (41 Shots)." "The best way to describe this record is that's its a bit of an anomaly," says Springsteen. "But not much. I don't really work linearly like a lot of people do."

Springsteen has always written and recorded significantly more songs than can fit on to whatever album he's creating at the moment. "I have a lot of this music on a computer," he says. "I bring it out on the road to amuse myself. Very often, if I have nothing to do late at night I'll bring it up and look at different bodies of music."

The songs that began catching Springsteen's attention were largely recorded after he reunited with the E Street Band in 1999. "The songs were relatively current and had a similar sound picture," he says. "I was interested in putting this material together in some form because it sounded like  it all fit together. . .You have to imagine that when I'm home or done with a tour I go into a studio and I'm surrounded by paintings that I've sorta half-finished. There might be something wrong with this one and I didn't have time to finish this one. When I go into my studio, I'm surrounded by all my music that I haven't released. I wait to see what's going to speak to me."

In December of 2012, he called producer Ron Aniello, whom he first worked with on 2012’s Wrecking Ball, and him to sort through about 15 songs. "He said, 'I’m on the road right now – just fool around with them and see what you think you can do,'" says Aniello. "Although they didn't fit the particular story he was telling for each album – you know how crazy he is about having each album tell a linear story. But these were fantastic songs."



Springsteen — who has grown close with Tom Morello ever since they first performed together in 2008 — wound up having the guitarist play on six songs, including new renditions of "American Skin (41 Shots)" and "The Ghost of Tom Joad." "He became a filter that I ran my music through," says Springsteen. "He would send the songs back to me with a very current slant on them. . .He jolted those songs into the now. He's one of the few guitarists that creates a world by himself. It's like The Edge or Pete Townshend or Johnny Marr. The E Street Band is a big house, but when Tom is on stage he builds another room."

In March 2013, Springsteen and the E Street toured Australia with Morello. Everyone was impressed by the crowd’s enthusiastic reactions to its new, Morello-assisted arrangement of "High Hopes" (written in the late Eighties by folk singer Tim Scott McConnell) and amped-up cover of "Just Like Fire Would" by Aussie punk legends the Saints. Springsteen called up engineer Nick DiDia – an old friend who recently relocated to Sydney – and booked some impromptu sessions. "We had no plans to record," says Springsteen. "But I found a hook to bring these songs to life and I was anxious to get to work on them."

Between revamped versions of the studio outtakes he had sent Aniello, plus new recordings of the covers and live favorites that Morello was infusing with fresh energy onstage, Springsteen realized he had enough material for an album. There was just one problem: The E Street Band had worldwide dates booked for the rest of the year. So he decided to record the entire LP between shows – something he’d never tried before – with members of the band overdubbing new parts at Aniello's Los Angeles studio or Springsteen’s home studio in New Jersey during breaks. "Previously, everything was like when I was a kid," says Springsteen. "I needed the peas to be on one plate and the corn had to be on another plate and I didn't like them to touch. That's where I was coming from. I thought everything had to be very segregated."

For Morello, getting to work with Springsteen more closely over the past year has been the thrill of a lifetime. "I am not a casual Bruce Springsteen fan –I am a big Bruce Springsteen fan," he says. "And 'The Ghost of Tom Joad' is one of his best songs. It cuts to the core of his social-justice writing. This version starts as a plaintive ballad, which feels like a lament, and becomes a full-bore rocker that feels like a threat."

A few weeks after High Hopes arrives, Springsteen and the E Street Band – with Morello in tow – will kick off a five-week tour of South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. One thing that's not on the books right now: any dates in the U.S., where they haven’t played since late 2012.

"We're looking around now to see what we might do," says Springsteen. "I don't want to say 'yes' because I don't want to disappoint people, but I certainly don't want to rule it out either. We're looking closely out at since there's places we missed on the last tour. We didn't get to Texas, where I love to play. We didn't get to Florida either. It might be fun to get back to some of those places."

This year also marks the 30th anniversary of Springsteen’s smash Born in the U.S.A. but his manager Jon Landau says there are no plans to celebrate that with a deluxe reissue – at least not yet. "There's ongoing work on a River box set," says Landau. "Maybe we’ll do that first. And we're doing some major work on his first two albums [1973's Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle] as we speak. Those will be forthcoming."

Springsteen didn't release a new studio album during the seven years between The Ghost of Tom Joad and The Rising, but he doesn't imagine anything like that will ever happen again. "It's like that old story," he says. "The light from the oncoming train focuses the mind."

Autant le coffret BORN TO RUN (que je trouve personnellement pas assez fourni par rapport au coffret DARKNESS) est sorti pile 30 ans après l'album original, autant le coffret DARKNESS a pris deux ans de retard, retard qu'il ne rattrapera à mon avis jamais, du coup tout est décalé. Et c'eut été très bizarre d'oublier THE RIVER dans la vague de rééditions...

Un mégaphone sur "Harry's Place"... ça promet. Il va encore y avoir des effets spéciaux sur cet album, je le sens, plus encore que sur WRECKING BALL... Et plus encore que dans STAR WARS VII...

Le plus drôle c'est qu'il n'est pas exclu que l'avenir de te donner raison...
