Un concert pour la radio locale, en direct, un dimanche matin d'hiver sur les ondes de cette radio texanne, en plein hiver, le matin d'un superbowl, ça devait être sympa d'écouter ça pénard près d'un feu de cheminée. Rempli d'anecdotes entre chaque titre, notamment qu'elle raconte qu'elle a longtemps caché qu'elle est fan des Stones, en plus d'être fan de Buddy Holly, mais ça ça ce sait de manière plus large. Et sa reprise de "No Expectations" sur le papier ne présageait rien de transcendant, ERREUR !!! Un petit bijou, comme l'artiste. Pour tous les fans d'Emmylou, Nanci devrait plaire...

Ça a du bon de faire le vide sur son PC et de prendre le temps de graver et d'écouter ce genre de chef-d’œuvre - n'ayons pas peur des mots - car là c'est Byzance, cette reprise de Buddy Holly est magnifique. Amusant de constater qu'elle est née le 6 juillet 1954, autrement dit le lendemain de l'enregistrement de ce qui est considéré comme étant le 1er 45 tours de rock'n'roll, "That's All Right Mama", et quand on connaît sa passion pour Buddy Holly, du Texas comme elle.

Live from London’s Mermaid Theatre, Paul Gambaccini invites listeners to spend the evening in the company of American singer-songwriter Nanci Griffith.
Nanci has successfully crossed the boundaries of country and folk music.
Dubbed “the queen of folkabilly” by Rolling Stone Magazine, Nanci was born on 6 July 1954
in Seguin, Texas. Her mother dabbled in amateur dramatics and her father was a publisher
and sang in a barbershop quartet. He would later provide backing vocals on one of Nanci’s
early albums.

The artist has penned such classics a Gulf Coast Highway (as recorded by Emmylou Harris and Willie Nelson), Love At The Five And Dime (a hit for Kathy Mattea) and Outbound Plane (a hit for Suzy Boggus). Nanci herself was the first to record Julie Gold’s classic, “From A Distance”, which has been used to awaken astronauts on US Space Shuttle missions.
She has been honoured with five Grammy Award nominations, three as a solo artist (winning for Other Voices, Other Rooms) and twice for performances on albums by The Chieftains.

Tonight, Nanci performs songs old and new, accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Robert Ziegler.

Country Comfort
Nanci Griffith celebrates the song every time she performs. She loves the stories in the song and her high, lonesome sound makes them even more comforting. Whether it’s an ode to the working man [It’s A Hard Life] or the lullaby of From A Distance, Griffith always manages to smooth things over and make for a happy ending.

Nanci Griffith’s latest tour is with a full orchestra backing her. On every stop, she plays with the orchestra at that stop which means you have to be very confident of not making mistakes. Every show offers an element of uncertainty. In Texas on February 9, she quoted the late liberal commentator Molly Ivins who said, "The next time I tell you people the governor of our state is no good and should not be president, I hope ya’ll will listen". Some Texans took offence and booed her, others walked out. Nanci is a Texan girl herself. She carried on.
Tonight in front of an adoring audience in London, she’s simply charming. Captured in excellent sound for posterity by the BBC. This radio show was broadcast on BBC 2. The show was Friday Night With hosted by Paul Gambaccini.
