Série instruments insolites (4/7): le glockenspiel, génial idiot

Membre de la famille percussive des idiophones, le glockenspiel entre dans l'histoire rock via Tubular Bells, instrumental mégalo de Mike Oldfield daté de 1973...

Il était une fois un jeune prodige anglais au caractère misanthrope, né en 1953. Musicien pro à 14 ans (...), Mike Oldfield trimballe déjà depuis un bout de temps 2 longs instrumentaux tarabiscotés entre transe orchestrale et impro mathématique: ils finissent par séduire Richard Branson, PDG du tout nouveau label Virgin Records. Finement raisonné, puisque l'album-résultat, Tubular Bells, paru au printemps 1973, naviguera autour des 15 millions d'exemplaires vendus dans le monde. Le thème magnétique du disque, incorporé dans la B.O. de L'Exorciste, devient synonyme d'angoisse et de jouissance sonores. Dans ce curieux scénario, le glockenspiel arrive dans la sarabande d'instruments que l'acteur Vivian Stanshall énonce dramatiquement alors que le morceau déploie ses ailes. Il déboule en numéro 3, après le Grand piano et le Reed and pipe organ. Livrant à 21 minute 05 exactement 20 secondes de lamelles en folie, jouant le machiavélique dididim-dididimdidimmmmm, funambule dans les aigus comme c'est sa vocation. Moment historique qui est au glockenspiel -"jeu de cloches" en allemand- ce que la grimace débile est aux frères Taloche, un cousin génétique. Carillon sur pattes qu'on frappe avec des maillets ou des baguettes, ce bizarre clavier-percu évoque le xylophone sauf que ses parties intimes ne sont pas faites de bois mais de métal. Créé au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, il va assez vite séduire Mozart dans La Flûte enchantée (1791) et essaimer jusqu'au compositeur contemporain Steve Reich (Drumming, 1971). Mais on peut aussi l'entendre dans le jazz, le hip hop, chez les affreux Rush ou au cœur du Little Wing de Jimi Hendrix daté de 1967.

Mur du glock

Sinon, il faut attendre les années 90 pour que le glockenchose reprenne un peu de couleur mode. Un de ses grands moments intervient sur le No Surprises de Radiohead en 1997, quand le groupe anglais, encore génial, s'envole dans une douceur opiacée alors que le glock distille les notes acides de la mélodie. Leçon n°1: le glockenspiel est une vinaigrette parfaite pour assaisonner salade comme morceau de rock. C'est le principe sonore du premier album d'Arcade Fire, Funeral, sorti en 2004: sur des chansons glorieusement tristes, le glockenspiel participe au Mur du son de la mélancolie extrême. C'est aussi le cas d'un des disques les plus "glockenspielés" de tous les temps, le Born To Run de Bruce Springsteen, sorti à l'été 1975. L'album, qui rendra le chanteur du New Jersey riche et célèbre, digère ses influences sixties à la Phil Spector en bombardant littéralement certains des titres de l'instrument: dans la plage titulaire, le glock fait la course avec la guitare pour savoir qui sera le plus héroïque... Tout cela a un peu chamboulé la caboche de Cory Arcangel, musicien trentenaire de Brooklyn qui s'est mis en tête de refaire tout l'album Born To Run version glockenspiel... Laughing

L'interprétation en duo est sympa, la voix du gars manque un peu de consistance, mais elle passe mieux quand il chante ensemble.
Concernant le fait de proposer au vote qu'elle est l'interprétation la meilleure , là ! je suis sceptique

Kurt Vile isort un CD 6 titres 'So Outta Reach' le 7 novembre.

Cinq chansons originales et une reprise de Bruce Springsteen : 'Downbound Train'.

Les cinq titres étaient prévus pour l'album de Vile, 'Smoke Ring For My Halo', mais n'avaient pas été conservées.

Les chansons ont été retravaillées avec le producteur John Agnello. 'So Outta Reach' : 'The Creature' 'It's Alright' 'Life's A Beach' 'Laughing Stock' 'Downbound Train' '(so outta reach)'

C'est plutôt de l'autrichien, il me semble, d'ailleurs celui qui fait Chocolate Genius est bien blanc ainsi que les choristes blacks qui sont bien blondes...Un signe qui ne trompe pas. Faut pas chagriner le public local.

Je ne connaissais pas du tout cet étonnant copier/coller des Seeger Sessions, il ne manque absolument rien.

Show of hands est un duo folk britannique (bon, là, ils sont 3, mais leur vie de couple ne nous.... regardent pas...), un groupe qui a publié une dizaine d'album depuis 1994.
La reprise est trouvable dans une version studio sur l'album Cover2 sorti en 2010, (mais le groupe ne fait pas que des reprises)
